The Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Maryland, whose parishioners raised money to build an orphanage in Namibia, was featured on John Stossel’s “20/20” special edition “Cheap In America.” On a Sunday in 2001, the church’s pastor had announced to his congregation of 650 that air-conditioning for the church was on its way—right after they raise funds to build the Namibian children’s home. The story of Mount Zion was one of the real-life examples of how private giving works in the developing world, featured in the first edition of the Index of Global Philanthropy.
