Does Olmert’s Government have a Political Future? A Look at the Report of the Winograd Commission of Inquiry on the Lebanon War Listen to this event below Monday, April 30, 2007, 3:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m. Hudson Institute The Betsy and Walter Stern Conference Room 1015 15th Street, NW 6th Floor Washington, DC 20005 On April 30 Israel’s Winograd Commission of Inquiry into the war in Lebanon will release its interim report. Its findings will address the country’s poor military performance in Lebanon and evaluate the testimonies of the war’s chief architects, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Amir Peretz, and former Chief of Staff Dan Halutz. Israel’s political elite is eagerly awaiting the report to see how far-reaching the Committee’s conclusions will be concerning Olmert and his chief cabinet ministers, and whether its findings will lead to a collapse of the government. To discuss these and related questions, three of Israel’s leading political observers will comment on the report and assess its implications for the prime minister and Israel’s leadership as a whole. Moderator: Meyrav Wurmser is the Director of the Center for Middle East Policy at Hudson Institute. Discussants: Shmuel Rosner is the Chief U.S. Correspondent for Haaretz. Rosner has written extensively on U.S. policy and politics, and has been a frequent guest speaker on Israeli television and radio. Yaron Deckel is the Washington Bureau Chief for the Israel Broadcasting Authority and is considered to be one of Israel's top political reporters and commentators. Deckel has covered the trials and tribulations of Israeli politics since 1985. Nathan Guttman is the Washington bureau chief for The Forward and previously for Ha’aretz and the Jerusalem Post. He has covered U.S.-Israel relations and the Middle East peace process since the early 1990s. TO RSVP, please email events@hudson.org or call 202-974-2400.
