The Heiligendamm G-8 Summit: The Growth and Responsibility Agenda, Combating Poverty

Listen to the Audio Verson of the Event

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007
3:00-5:00 PM

On the eve of the 33rd summit of the G-8 at Heiligendamm, Hudson Institute’s Center for European Studies is pleased to invite you to attend a panel discussion on the G-8’s proposed agenda of “Growth and Responsibility.” Fears of a growing anti-globalization movement and the collapse of the Doha talks have given a renewed impetus to the German presidency of the G-8 to put a “human face” on globalization. A panel of experts convened by Hudson’s Center for European Studies will preview key aspects of the G-8 summit, including the protest movement, a renewed focus on finding a lasting solution to African poverty, and the role that G-8 nations such as Canada might play in taking the lead on global warming issues in light of President Bush’s call for a common goal on curbing greenhouse emissions.

Panelists for this discussion include Carol Adelman, Director of Hudson’s Center for Global Prosperity, on the G-8’s poverty reduction agenda in Africa; Christopher Sands, Senior Fellow at Hudson, speaking on the role of G-8 countries such as Canada in energy politics, global warming and globalization in general; Shanker Singham, a noted international lawyer and partner with Squire, Sanders & Dempsey LLC; and Ira Strauss, U.S. Coordinator of the Committee on Eastern Europe and Russia in NATO, on the anti-globalization movement and public disorder.  The panel will be moderated by Richard Weitz, Hudson Senior Fellow.
