Christians Flee Islamist Extremism in the Palestinian Territories

July 17, 2007, 12:30 - 2:00 PM - Hudson Institute, Washington, D.C. Headquarters

Listen to this event below

Featuring Dr. Justus Weiner, Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.

Growing Islamist extremism endangers a 2,000-year-old Palestinian Christian community. Heightened violence, the political rise of Hamas, and fears of the imposition of Islamic shari’a law have thrown into question the very survival of the Palestinian Christians, who now comprise only three percent of the Palestinian population. In recent weeks, a series of attacks against Christian targets has led Christians in the Gaza Strip to appeal for international assistance. The dire situation and future prospects of this threatened community will be discussed by Dr. Justus Weiner, a distinguished Scholar in Residence at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. Dr. Weiner teaches courses on international law and international business at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and lectures widely abroad. For the past nine years he has researched and published a book and numerous articles on the difficult and often ignored plight of Palestinian Christians.
