Microfranchising: A Powerful Idea, but Does It Work?
Tuesday December 8th 8:00 - 9:15 AM
Reynolds, Beck, Metcalf Little, Runde, Deelder Microfranchising — the act of providing sound business opportunities and services to the poor by introducing scaled-down business concepts found in successful franchise organizations — has attracted a great deal of interest in recent years as a new approach to creating jobs, raising incomes, spurring entrepreneurship, and accelerating growth in developing countries.
While a promising and powerful idea, does microfranchising work in the real world? Dalberg Global Development Advisors, with the support of the John Templeton Foundation, recently published a groundbreaking study on microfranchising, entrepreneurship, and job creation in developing countries. A panel of experts will discuss the study, the potential for franchise business models to deliver public goods and services profitably, and other aspects of microfranchising.
The roundtable discussants were: Steve Beck, Senior Fellow, John Templeton Foundation; Wouter Deelder, Associate Partner, Dalberg Global Advisors; John Reynolds, CFE, President, IFA Educational Foundation, International Franchise Association; and Daniel Runde, Head of Partnership Development, International Finance Corporation. Heidi Metcalf Little, Hudson Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the Center for Global Prosperity, introduced.
