This essay, which appeared in the April 16 issue of National Review, was prepared for the 2007 Bradley Symposium addressing the topic “Who Are We Today? American Character and Identity in the 21st Century,” held on May 3, 2007, in Washington, D.C. The symposium was sponsored by Hudson Institute's Bradley Center for Philanthropy and Civic Renewal.
