One of the surprise political issues of the 2008 presidential campaign has been a debate about "community organizers" – who they are, what they really do, what kinds of responsibilities they may or may not bear. This reminds us that Senator Barack Obama is really our first presidential candidate to have come up within and to have been shaped by the world of community organization, nonprofits, and foundations (he has served on the boards of two major nationally-known philanthropies). Unhappily, the discussion so far reminds us how little most Americans know about that world. On Wednesday, October 1, Hudson Institute's Bradley Center hosted a panel of experts to help address this issue, with particular attention to this question: What can we look for from a President whose resume includes a period as a community organizer? Panelists included HARRY BOYTE of the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute and long-time Chicago South Side community organizer JAMES CAPRARO, both of whom have provided advice to the Obama campaign, as well as National Review's BYRON YORK and STANLEY KURTZ of the Ethics and Public Policy Center. The Bradley Center’s WILLIAM SCHAMBRA moderated the discussion.
