Hudson Institute Releases Study on Improving Education and Earnings for Low-Income Students

January 15, 2009

Washington—Students from low-income families are underrepresented at every milestone in the educational pipeline, limiting their ability to break the cycle of poverty.

Hudson Institute will release a new study entitled Pathways to Boosting the Earnings of Low-Income Students by Increasing Their Educational Attainment by CNA economists Louis Jacobson and Christine Mokher. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the paper examines case studies of 145,000 students in the State of Florida from 1996 to 2007 and presents new evidence that relates educational achievement to earnings. This study is the largest ever to correlate education and income levels. The conclusion: a two-year degree in the health care field holds the promise of a well-paying career for students of many degrees of ability. The report can be found here.

Experts such as Professor Thomas Bailey, Columbia University Teachers College; Professor Harry Holzer, Georgetown University; Professor Anthony Carnevale, Georgetown University; Chester E. Finn, Thomas B. Fordham Foundation; Frederick Hess, American Enterprise Institute; and Diana Furchtgott-Roth, Hudson Institute will comment.
