Savings to Be Found in Medicare with Market-Based Reforms

WASHINGTON—Former Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Michael Leavitt spoke to a Hudson Institute audience last week on lessons for the future of health care. In an op-ed published today in The Hill, Leavitt and Hudson Senior Fellow and Former Deputy Secretary of HHS Tevi Troy argue that the market-based principles of the landmark Medicare Part D prescription drug program can be used for larger-scale health care reform. 

"The Medicare prescription drug plan works because it is market-based, allowing seniors to choose from a selection of private sector insurance plans," they write. "As the deficit super committee struggles to meet the budget targets, politicians on both the left and the right should look to the Part D model as a valuable example of a bipartisan, effective and economically-promising health care reform."
