Rod Hunter served, until mid-2007, as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director at the National Security Council. While at the NSC, he was responsible for coordinating the administration's policies on international economics, including trade, finance, investment, energy, and the environment. Prior to joining the NSC, Hunter served from 2001 to 2003, as special counsel in the Office of the United States Trade Representative.
From 1989 to 2001, Hunter practiced law in Brussels, where he handled EU and member state legal and regulatory matters. While in Brussels, he also served as Director for Regulatory Studies and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Centre for the New Europe.
Earlier in his career, Hunter served as a judicial clerk for Chief Justice Sir Anthony Mason, High Court of Australia, and for Judge Boyce Martin, U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and as an assistant to Senator John Warner. He received his B.A. from Hampden-Sydney College and his J.D. from the University of Virginia.
