Mario Mancuso is a former Under Secretary of Commerce of the United States. Nominated by President George W. Bush, Mr. Mancuso was unanimously confirmed as Under Secretary of Commerce by the U.S. Senate on May 24, 2007. He returned to the private sector on January 20, 2009.
As Under Secretary, Mr. Mancuso was responsible for promoting U.S. leadership across strategic industry and technology sectors to advance U.S. security and economic objectives. In this role, Mr. Mancuso identified and opened key export markets around the world for U.S. technology products and services consistent with U.S. security interests, and participated as a senior member of the U.S. government’s foreign direct investment review team.
Specifically, Mr. Mancuso supervised all of the strategic technology dialogues for the United States, including the U.S.-China High Technology and Strategic Trade Working Group, the U.S.-India High Technology Cooperation Group, and the U.S.-Israel High Technology Forum. Mr. Mancuso also participated in the Committee of Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), and served on the CFIUS Advisory Committee and the Global Markets Board of the National Intelligence Council of the United States.
While at the Department of Commerce, Mr. Mancuso managed an agency of approximately 400 professionals in offices throughout the United States and in China, India, Hong Kong, the UAE and Russia.
From 2005-2007, Mr. Mancuso served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism. While at the Pentagon, Mr. Mancuso was the senior civilian U.S. defense official with immediate responsibility for the global special operations and counter-terrorism portfolio.
As DASD, Mr. Mancuso led and managed an office which included approximately 40 national security strategists, and provided oversight of a $10 billion budget (excluding classified budget) and 53,000 special operations personnel worldwide.
While at the Department of Defense, Mr. Mancuso also sat on the Department of Defense Advisory Board for the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, the Near East-South Asia Center for Strategic Studies, the George C. Marshall European Center for Strategic Studies, and the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies.
Before entering government service, Mr. Mancuso spent almost a decade in the private sector as an international corporate lawyer and business executive in New York, Boston, and London.
In the private sector, Mr. Mancuso advised, managed, and executed complex cross-border transactions and investments for leading investment banks and public and private company clients worldwide.
Mr. Mancuso graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, and received his law degree from New York University School of Law. A former Army infantry officer, he is a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
