Hudson Institute China Center presents episode four of Evening Chats with Mike Pompeo: A Message to the Chinese People. In this series, Seventieth US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo speaks directly to the Chinese people about the Chinese Communist Party and US-China relations.

In this episode, Pompeo explains that freedom and democracy are universal values. The truths of the Declaration of Independence, though penned in the United States, are universal and apply to all peoples, including those in China and Taiwan. Pompeo gives evidence for this fact in the work of Chinese intellectuals, including P.C. Chang and Liu Xiaobo who have had an immense impact on the world’s understanding of rights and freedom. He reminds us that the sovereign and democratic people of Taiwan are but one testament to what a free Chinese people could accomplish, if given the chance.
