What we have seen in Israel over the last 48 hours was not just an act of war, it was an act of barbarity and depravity. Israel’s immediate priority will be the defeat of Hamas and its partners. The United States should provide any assistance and support necessary in that effort, for as long as it takes.
In addition to helping Israel defeat Hamas and terrorist organizations surrounding Israel, the United States also needs a policy that recognizes Hamas and their partners as a proxy of Iran. Make no mistake, the horrendous evil we have witnessed is enabled and backed by Iran. And Iran has been strengthened and emboldened by misguided American policy. Peace and security in the Middle East cannot be achieved by accommodating the terrorist regime in Tehran. As Israel has grown closer to making full peace with its Arab neighbors, Iran remains hellbent on its genocidal quest to eliminate the only democracy in the region. Iran also seeks, with its security partners Russia and China, to upend the world order that the United States and our allies and partners like Israel, have sacrificed so much to establish.
Israel is not just America’s most important ally in the Middle East, it is one of our most critical allies, period. Hudson Institute will always stand on the side of Israel—because America and Israel are moral and strategic allies of the first order. We will continue to attack misguided policies of appeasement and isolationism, we will continue to advocate for policies that deter our enemies, and we will continue to ensure that policymakers and the public understand the moral and strategic case for a safe and secure Jewish state.
