**Please be advised: This event will premiere LIVE on this page at 12:00 p.m. EST, Friday, January 22.**

Join Hudson Institute for a discussion with Michael Barone about the future of the Republican Party in the aftermath of the 2020 election and the tumultuous months leading up to President Joe Biden’s inauguration. One of the country’s foremost experts on American politics and elections, Michael Barone is a senior political analyst at the Washington Examiner and an Emeritus Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. In addition to co-authoring the Almanac of American Politics (released annually), Mr. Barone has published several books on American politics, including most recently, How America’s Political Parties Change (and How They Don’t). Hudson Institute Distinguished Fellow Walter Russell Mead will moderate the conversation.

The 2016 and 2020 elections unsettled many foundational assumptions about American politics. President Donald J. Trump’s successful appeal to white voters without a college education and recent electoral gains among minorities mirrored the Democratic Party’s gains in suburban areas. This shift has led some conservatives to advocate new policies to appeal to working class voters instead of middle-class suburbanites. It is unclear how important this realignment is, however, or if pursuing this pathway is a viable strategy.

This conversation is part of a series entitled, “The Future of the Middle Class” by Hudson Institute’s Center for the Future of Liberal Society. In this series, Hudson Distinguished Fellow Walter Russell Mead will moderate discussions with thought-provoking policy experts about some of the most pressing challenges associated with rebuilding the economy and promoting the prosperity of America’s middle class.
