Report examines performance of Modi and the Indian government across seven industries
WASHINGTON – Hudson Institute’s South Asia Program has released a new report, “Modi One Year On,” examining Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s legislative successes and failures one year into his term.
The report provides an in-depth analysis of Mr. Modi’s electoral campaign promises and whether his government has succeeded in initiating reform across the economy, defense, healthcare, trade and investment, energy, education and labor sectors.
“It is critical that we measure achievement against expectation, given the international interest in the performance of the Modi government and the expectations about India’s economic potential being unleashed,” said Ambassador Husain Haqqani, Hudson Institute Senior Fellow and Director for South and Central Asia.
The report findings draw from an in-depth examination of the electoral manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), campaign speeches by Mr. Modi, policy documents of the Modi government over the last year and data obtained from international organizations including the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. The report examines key policy areas, comparing electoral campaign promises made by the Modi government to what has been accomplished.
“Modi One Year On” was produced by the Hudson Institute’s South Asia Program, an initiative launched in 2014 to promote the idea that South Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives, and Afghanistan) should be equal partners in globalization.
