Former Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan

The new Japanese government under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is poised to take on a vigorous economic policy program aimed at fostering long-term growth, innovation, and supply chain resiliency. In 2025, Japan concluded a trade deal with the United States, signed a memorandum of understanding for a $550 billion industrial fund, and battled disruptions to its manufacturing supply chains. Looking to 2026, the Takaichi government is poised to bolster 17 strategic industries to support Japan’s long-term economic growth and security.

On January 20, Hudson Japan Chair Kenneth R. Weinstein will host Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, former head of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), for remarks on the Takaichi government’s strategy for economic growth and economic security. Then, Minister Nishimura and Dr. Weinstein will sit down for a fireside chat to address range of topics, including the US-Japan economic relationship and opportunities for cooperation. The event will conclude with audience Q&A.
