Author, Call for Transnational Jihad

In November 2008, terrorists belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) orchestrated a four-day series of shootings and bombings that killed and injured hundreds in Mumbai, India, including American citizens. While that was the first time that many Americans heard of this group, LeT has been active for decades. With the continued radicalization of Pakistan, the rise of radical Islamist groups, and the inability of the Pakistani state to take action against them, Hudson Institute hosted a book talk with Arif Jamal, an independent U.S.-based journalist and author of Call for Transnational Jihad.

In Call for Transnational Jihad, Jamal explores the formation of the parent organization of LeT, the Jamaat-ud-Dawa. Jamal draws upon primary sources to trace the ideological and organizational roots of Jamaat-ud-Dawa back through the 1970s and show the presence of Jamaat-ud-Dawa and its affiliates in more than 100 countries including Iran, Bangladesh, Turkey, and the United States.

On June 30th, Arif Jamal joined Husain Haqqani, Hudson senior fellow and former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, to discuss Lashkar-e-Taiba and other radical Islamist groups in Pakistan.
