Executive Summary
 

  • Battlefield assessment. Russia maintained the initiative on land, conducting more than 200 combat engagements each day, while Ukraine reshuffled its operational command structure to reinforce the Sloviansk–Kramatorsk defensive belt.

1. Battlefield Assessment

Last week, news sources revealed that Ukraine has reportedly used British made drones for long-range strikes inside Russia over the past six months. The drones include BAE Systems’ jet-powered Nyan and a second British platform whose manufacturer and designation remain undisclosed for security reasons. British drones have participated in attacks on oil refineries near Moscow and in Yaroslavl and Volgograd. Ukraine also used the Nyan against a target in the Russian city of Belgorod

Designed for deep-strike missions in heavily contested and satellite-navigation-denied environments, the Nyan has undergone both land and maritime trials. The British Army tested it during Exercise Spring Storm in Estonia in May and June. The Royal Navy launched the Nyan from the experimental vessel XV Patrick Blackett during Exercise Neptune Reach, a British military trial conducted off the south coast of England last month.

Although the UK Ministry of Defence declined to confirm any operational details, revelations that Ukraine has used British drones prompted Moscow to warn the UK of unspecified consequences. London rejected the Russian pressure and pledged to continue supporting Ukraine. The UK also plans to provide Ukraine with 150,000 drones by the end of 2026 as part of a £752 million assistance package. These developments signal a deepening British role in Ukraine’s long-range strike architecture and demonstrate that Russian escalation rhetoric has not changed London’s policy toward Ukraine.

An alarming development in missile warfare also continued to unfold last week. According to Ukrainian sources, Russia’s Banderol missile is becoming the weapon of choice in Moscow’s long-range salvos on the southern front. Russia’s use of this missile offers another example of the Kremlin’s shift from advanced weapons toward affordable mass. 

Costing between $50,000 to $150,000, the Banderol can carry a 250-pound warhead over approximately 310 miles at nearly 370 miles per hour. Russia reportedly produces around 80 of these missiles each month. Moscow employs the Banderol predominantly against ports, logistics hubs, and warehouses in Odesa, Ukraine, where they are responsible for 80 percent of the strikes.

Launched from multiple platforms, including Orion drones, the inexpensive missile reduces Ukraine’s warning time and forces Kyiv to expend scarce air-defense missiles or launch fighter sorties. Both high-cost options are difficult to sustain against a low-cost munition. 

Russia’s production of the Banderol depends on Chinese engines and Western electronics. While this remains a vulnerability for Moscow, Russia’s commercial supply chains continue to sustain production of the projectile. The strategic challenge facing Ukraine is how to counter such a low-cost threat when Kyiv already faces shortages of interceptor missiles.

In the land domain, the battlespace remained strategically static and operationally intense. With more than 200 tactical engagements per day, Russia continued to maintain its offensive footing in Ukraine. Sloviansk again remained the fiercest flashpoint, while Pokrovsk, Kramatorsk, Kostiantynivka, and Kupiansk also saw sustained fighting.

The protracted contest for Sloviansk prompted a shift in Ukraine’s operational command. Colonel Emil Ishkulov, the former commander of Ukraine’s 80th Air Assault Brigade, is reportedly expected to assume command of the nation’s 11th Army Corps. This unit is responsible for defending Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, the northern anchors of Ukraine’s Donetsk fortress belt. 

If this development is confirmed, Ishkulov would replace Brigadier General Oleksii Maistrenko, whose management style reportedly failed to meet modern operational requirements. Ishkulov currently serves as deputy commander of the 7th Rapid Response Corps. He is known for detailed planning and for prioritizing troop survival.

2. Drone-on-Drone Warfare Ushers in A New Era in the Russia-Ukraine War

Battlefield footage released this week illustrates how drone-on-drone warfare is shaping the war between Russia and Ukraine. The footage shows a Ukrainian TerMIT unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) narrowly evading an attacking Russian first-person-view (FPV) drone during a cargo-delivery mission. After detecting the approaching drone through a rear-facing onboard camera, the Ukrainian operator executes a last-second left turn that takes the vehicle out of the FPV drone’s attack trajectory. The UGV then continues toward the Ukrainian position with its cargo. 

The encounter illustrates how even routine robotic logistics missions have become contested engagements between remotely operated systems. This not the first time Ukrainian UGVs have faced Russian aerial drones. Previous battlespace visuals has shown Ukrainian ground robots conducting similar evasive maneuvers against Russian FPVs. 

In other engagements last week, Ukrainian TerMIT UGVs with machine guns attached to their platforms engaged Russian FPV drones. Developed by the Ukrainian defense company TenCore, the TerMIT is a compact, tracked UGV designed to perform dangerous frontline tasks without exposing soldiers. 

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense formally codified the new platform for military use in June 2025. Its low profile, low center of gravity, and tracked chassis allow it to negotiate trenches, steep slopes, difficult off-road terrain, and exposed supply routes. The TerMIT UGV’s modular architecture enables a single vehicle to carry approximately 660 pounds of supplies, evacuate casualties, conduct reconnaissance, lay mines or razor wire, support communications and electronic warfare, and carry weapons such as machine guns and automatic grenade launchers.

On July 9, 2026, TenCore also unveiled AI KIT, an artificial-intelligence software suite intended to boost the autonomy of the company’s ground platforms. The system transfers routine navigation functions from a UGV operator to the vehicle itself, permitting hands-free movement along predefined routes. AI KIT can continue operating when communications deteriorate and, even after a complete loss of contact, execute a 180-degree turn and retrace its route. Programmable failsafe functions also govern the vehicle’s behavior during predefined emergencies, although a UGV operator can continue monitoring the mission and resume manual control. 

No public evidence yet shows AI KIT performing the kind of evasive maneuvering shown in the footage that TenCore released last July. Nonetheless, AI KIT represents a logical response to the conditions Ukrainian ground robots continually face. Ukrainian UGV operators must simultaneously navigate difficult terrain, monitor multiple camera feeds, maintain communications, and watch for mines, artillery, and attacking drones. Automating routine navigation functions can reduce operators’ cognitive burden and allow them to focus on immediate threats.

Some reports credit a human operator with performing the 180-degree turn shown in TenCore’s video. The company has not publicly identified automatic FPV-drone detection or autonomous threat evasion among AI KIT’s capabilities. The innovation nevertheless points toward the next stage of UGV development: integrating computer-vision-based threat detection with autonomous evasive maneuvering. As FPV drones increasingly hunt ground robots, their survivability will depend not only on equipping them with armor and electronic protection but also on sensors, faster processing speeds, and the ability to react more quickly than an unassisted human operator. 

Recent weeks have also highlighted duels between naval and aerial drones. Visuals from these tactical engagements show Russian Lancet loitering munitions targeting Ukrainian unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) that were carrying FPV drones. Since early 2026, such engagements have become increasingly common in the Black Sea. Zala Aero Group, the Russian company that manufactures the Lancet drone, has reported additional USV kills, which highlight the AI-empowered IRRA intelligent targeting and recognition system that augments the Zala drone baseline. 

These augmented systems pose a threat worth monitoring. Ukraine’s unmanned naval platforms are essential for keeping Russia’s Black Sea Fleet constrained and under constant threat. Kyiv’s robotic naval-warfare deterrent is also important for pressuring the Russia’s shadow fleet, which helps finance Moscow’s ongoing invasion campaign. 

Last week also saw a new milestone in air-to-air drone warfare over Ukraine. The STING Shahed-hunting drone, manufactured by the Ukrainian company Wild Hornets, intercepted a Russian-Iranian Shahed loitering munition at 23,000 feet, marking a new high-altitude record for the STING family in combat. The elite Alfa group of the Ukrainian Intelligence Service carried out the engagement.

3. What to Look for in the Coming Weeks

With tensions rising between Russia and the UK, Moscow will likely hike its subversive and hybrid activity. These efforts could range from sabotage activities to cyberattacks targeting the UK’s defense industry.
