Bernardo Arévalo’s decisive victory in Guatemala’s recent runoff elections signifies an important shift in Guatemala, which has experienced a significant deterioration of its democratic institutions in recent years. Arévalo will face numerous challenges in meeting Guatemalan voters’ desire for measures that address persistent corruption and the rise of organized crime.

Hudson Adjunct Fellow Daniel Batlle will discuss the path forward for Guatemala with Bernardo Rico, program director at the International Republican Institute; Marielos Chang, professor of political science at the Universidad del Valle; Edgar Ortiz, director of legal analysis at the Fundación Libertad y Desarrollo; and Enrique Naveda, a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University.
