Michael Solon

Michael Solon is a senior fellow at Hudson Institute. His work at Hudson focuses on federal budget policy, deficit and debt reduction strategies, trade policy, and regulatory and entitlement reform.

Previously, Mr. Solon served as policy director for strategic planning in the office of Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, where he advised on budget, economics, and appropriations matters while managing the intricate parliamentary and budgetary rules that govern Senate legislative consideration. During his 25-year tenure in the Senate, he held key positions including economic policy adviser to Senator Phil Gramm, where he handled budget, tax, health, appropriations, and homeland security issues for the Finance, Banking, and Appropriations Committees. He also served as director of the Senate Steering Committee under Chairman Gramm and deputy staff director of the Senate Banking Committee. In the Senate Republican Whip Office, he identified and addressed policy differences to ensure successful vote delivery on major legislative initiatives including budget measures, tax cuts, and reconciliation. 

His broader Washington experience includes advisory roles with notable figures such as Representative Dick Armey, Vice President Dan Quayle, Senator Bob Kasten, and Social Security Commissioner Dorcas Hardy, as well as campaign work for former Texas Governor Bill Clements and former Congressman Steve Bartlett.

Mr. Solon received a BA from the University of Texas at Austin.
