WASHINGTON, D.C. — Hudson Institute mourns the loss of former senior fellow and long-time Commentary editor Norman Podhoretz, who passed away at 95. Hudson President and CEO John P. Walters offered the following statement:
“My thoughts are with Norman’s family at this time of loss. Norman was a great American who used his intellectual and literary gifts to make our country stronger and our lives more insightful and richer. He is the model of the writer-warrior and the thoughtful critic. I also remember him as a brave and tireless defender of the Jewish people and Judaism. His passing calls upon us to step up to his example.”
Board Chair Sarah May Stern said, “Norman combined an original intellect with a rare ability to see beyond convention, and he devoted that gift to improving the world.”
Podhoretz was editor in chief of Commentary from 1960 until 1995, when he became the magazine’s editor at large and joined Hudson as a senior fellow. He authored more than a dozen books, and he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004. He is survived by his son, John, and his daughters, Ruthie Blum and Naomi Decter Munson; as well as 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
