South Africa’s upcoming election is likely to be historic. Polling suggests that the election will deliver a coalition government for the first time since 1994. Multiple South African political parties have a chance to play an outsized role in the government of one of Africa’s most important countries.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was South Africa’s fourth largest party after the last national election in 2019 and has its stronghold in the important KwaZulu-Natal Province. The IFP is also a signatory to the opposition Multi-Party Charter for South Africa.

As part of a series of discussions with South African political parties hosted by Hudson Senior Fellow Joshua Meservey, the Hon. Mr. Mkhuleko Hlengwa will offer insights into the IFP’s governing philosophy, its perspective on foreign policy, and its assessment of the impending national elections.
