South Africa’s upcoming election is likely to be historic, with opinion polls suggesting that the election will deliver a coalition government for the first time since 1994. Multiple South African political parties have a chance to play an outsized role in the government of one of Africa’s most important countries.

The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) is one of four South African parties to have 10 or more seats in parliament. In the last national election in 2019, FF+ won seats in every province except one. The party is central to the hotly contested campaign in the Western Cape—the only opposition-controlled province—which is emerging as a key battleground where the outcome could alter the South African political landscape.

As part of a series of discussions with South African political parties hosted by Hudson Senior Fellow Joshua Meservey, Dr. Corné Mulder will offer insights into Freedom Front Plus’s governing philosophy, its perspective on foreign policy, and its assessment of the impending national elections. Dr. Mulder is South Africa’s longest serving parliamentarian, and has for years been a pivotal figure in multiparty efforts to unseat the ruling African National Congress.
